India saw a year-on-year contraction of 5% in shipments in the third quarter of 2023, according to a new report. This happened even as Apple witnessed a record-breaking quarterly shipment, alongside Tecno, Infinix, and Motorola, who also finished the quarter with their highest shipments to date.
The report titled ‘Smartphone market share by vendor for 15 major countries during Q3 2023’ from TechInsights provides a comprehensive overview of the global market, highlighting the varied performance across different regions. While countries like Brazil, Canada, Japan, and Mexico bucked the trend with stable or growing shipments, others weren’t as fortunate. Like India, China also saw a modest 5% dip in total shipments, though Huawei and OnePlus managed to increase their numbers substantially.
Japan’s market also experienced a shakeup, with Apple’s share dipping below 50% for two consecutive quarters due to the weaker sales performance of the iPhone 15 series. Google capitalised on this opportunity, rising to the second spot for the first time, propelled by the affordable Pixel series.
Mexico’s top five OEMs, including Samsung, Xiaomi, Motorola, Apple, and Honor, captured a whopping 84% share of the total market. The country also recorded the highest growth in shipments among the 15 countries, coming in at about 15%. Russia, on the other hand, faced the steepest decline in shipments at 35%, significantly higher than any other country.
An earlier report from Counterpoint Research, dated November 10, 2023, sheds light on the broader trends affecting the global smartphone market. This report revealed that the overall global market saw a slight 1% year-on-year decline in smartphone shipments, totalling 299.8 million units in Q3 2023. Samsung, despite an 8% YoY drop, retained its position as the top smartphone player, thanks to an 11% quarter-on-quarter growth. Xiaomi stood out as the only top-five brand to witness year-on-year growth, shipping 41.5 million smartphones.
Brands like Honor, Motorola, Tecno, and Huawei saw double-digit annual growth, as did Infinix and itel, other Transsion brands alongside Tecno. Regionally, the Middle East and Africa exhibited the highest annual shipment growth, while North America faced the highest decline.
