Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating after a man was seriously injured during an arrest by London police over the weekend.
Officers were responding to a break and enter at a business on Power Street, located just south of Hamilton Road and Highbury Avenue, around 2 a.m. on Saturday, police said in a statement.
Surveillance cameras captured two people inside the property, police said, adding that a male suspect was located with the help of a canine unit.
The interaction with police left a man hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Police did not specify the nature of the injury. The man was later discharged from the hospital.
Police provided no additional information and directed all inquiries to the SIU, which did not immediately return a request for comment.
It’s at least the ninth investigation to be launched by the SIU involving London police since September, and the 21st so far this year. Seven cases have been closed so far, with no charges laid.
Over the weekend, the SIU announced that it would not lay charges against a London police officer in the shooting death of a 35-year-old armed suspect in July.
SIU director Joseph Martino found no reasonable grounds to believe the officer committed a criminal offence in connection to the man’s death, a news release issued by the agency said.
